![]() Overall Feel: Does the notebook feel substantial or flimsy? Is it a good weight and size? How portable is it? Does it pack easily into certain bags? Will it hold up against wear and tear? Are there too many/too few pages? Or is it just right? ![]() Page Quality: Is the paper smooth enough for writing? Is it thin or thick? Does the weight of the page make it feel luxurious or flimsy? Is the texture soft and smooth or coarse and scratchy? Is the paper recycled/recycled-feeling? Colored or unbleached or bleached bright white? Does the ink bleed through? ![]() And while individual preferences may vary, we’ve aimed to standardize our judgments by evaluating each notebook on a scale of 1 (poor) through 5 (excellent) in the following categories:ĭesign: Is there enough room to write? Do the aesthetics and ergonomics of the open notebook encourage you to use it? Do the lines/dots/grid feel impactful in a good way or overly designed and distracting? Or are they, in fact, perfectly muted? And if you agree or disagree (or have a favorite we missed), let us know in the comments - we just might test your favorite when we update this list in the future.Īmong our team members, we have those who prefer lined notebooks, others who like blank ones we have our spiral diehards and bullet-journal enthusiasts. The resulting list is a ranking of the top 100 notebooks, according to Strategist editors and writers. Then we called in notebooks of all kinds, including bullet journals, composition books, waterproof reporter pads, and a few exciting additions from around the world - places like Portugal, Japan, even Bulgaria - and put them to the test. In the same way we went about ranking 100 pens, we started by digging through our own archive of notebook coverage, consulted dozens of experts, and gathered up our personal favorites to determine the top competitors. ![]() Finding the best options can be an obsessive quest - and thus one we couldn’t resist. Hardcover or soft? Leather or cloth? Spiral-bound or sewn? Are the pages gridded? Are they a comfortable writing size? Do they tear out easily? Whether you use your notebook mainly for jotting, reporting, journaling, list-making - or some Beautiful Mind–esque combination of all of the above - the details really matter. ![]()

![]() ![]() ![]() The final thing is to set the speed that the text will follow the cursor. If the mouse position is above our text position we subtract the vectors y direction from the text position’s y co-ordinate, or add if below. If the mouse position is to the left of our text position we subtract the vector’s x direction from the text position’s x co-ordinate, or add if it is to the right. We move our text position via addition or subtraction of the vector from our co-ordinates. Once we have created our vector we can the use this to move our text in the correct direction. The central position of the graph is the text position and the 8 lines coming off of it are all of the possibilities for the cursor position at any point in time which we use to define our vector equation. This boils down to four conditions to work out the vector to draw between the cursor position and text position. I probably lost some of you there but the important part to all this is the last section. Rosetta Stone discovered in 1799 colorized 0,0 is the top left of the canvas and x,y is the bottom right.įor any of you that understand chicken scratch maths hieroglyphics I bestow unto you these pictures of my notebook We will let the text position co-ordinates equal (cx,cy) and the mouse pointer co-ordinates equal (mx,my). ![]() In order for the text to know which direction it needs to head in, we need to draw a vector between these two points. There are two sets of co-ordinates that we care about for this example, The x,y position of our text and the x,y position of our mouse pointer. Now we can finally get onto all of the fun vector maths… draw() is a function that constantly loops which we will use to call all of our functions. Our setup() function defines this canvas, the background colour and a few initial variables on first load. With p5.js we create a canvas that we can draw to and interact with via the p5.js library functions. Now that you’ve seen the end product we can get into the real nitty-gritty of what’s actually happening here.īefore we get into an explanation of the maths, a short explanation of the basic p5.js things going on is needed. ![]() |
